Welcome back to the Weekend Wrap Up, your weekly summary of all things sports and pop culture. This week’s song is “Confetti” by Big K.R.I.T.
K.R.I.T. has been doing work in the underground and mixtape scene since his acclaimed debut, K.R.I.T. Wuz Here was released in 2011. He followed that up with two successful studio albums, Live from the Underground & Cadillactica, before a two year hiatus away from music. Now he’s back with a highly anticipated album 4eva Is a Mighty Long Time, released on Friday and already #1 on the Hip-Hop album charts on itunes. Let us begin:
“When you living that high up, it’s hard to see the tension”
The big surprise in the music industry came Friday, when Offset of the Migos proposed to his girlfriend and Weekend Wrap Up frequent, Cardi B, live in front of thousands at Power 99’s Powerhouse concert in Philadelphia. This is coming off a tumultuous previous weekend that saw them break-up and get back together within the span of a few hours on social media. But now everything seems to be in a good place, as both artists have been celebrating the engagement online and in interviews. Congrats to the happy couple.
“This shit is so suspicious”
Also happening on Friday was the return of everyone’s favorite middle schoolers, the kids from Strangers Things, when the new season dropped early Friday morning. No show has quite dominated pop culture outside of Game of Thrones the way that Stranger Things have. Combine 80’s nostalgia, spooky visuals, and a stellar cast, and you have the recipe for a hit show that’s made for the binge-watching crowd. This season finds the kids (and parents) diving deeper into the mystery of the Upside Down and the city of Hawkins. No spoilers here, but the new season is already lit.
“What’s a crown if you don’t protect it”
Saturday’s big college football showdown took place between two top ten ranked teams, #6 Ohio State and #2 Penn State. Penn State was previously undefeated coming into the game, and considered a top-tier team for the first time since coming off probation for the Sandusky scandal. The game lived up to expectations as one of the most exciting of the season, culminating in a shocking comeback win for the Buckeyes, who were down 15 in the fourth quarter but prevailed 39-38 thanks to a last minute TD pass from quarterback J.T. Barrett. Barrett cemented his status as one of the best QB’s in the country, and a lock as a Heisman favorite heading into the end of the year.
“Running up the score just to expose a bluff”
Sunday’s NFL action was mostly a low scoring affair, especially during the early 1 o’clock games. It wasn’t until the late afternoon games that things picked up, specifically the 4 pm match-up between the Houston Texans and the Seattle Seahawks that lit up the scoreboard. The high scoring affair came as a surprise as it featured two usually top-tier defenses, facing off against a rookie QB and a QB playing behind a bad offensive line, in Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson, respectively. Watson in particular showed out, throwing for 401 yards and 4 TD’s against the vaunted Legion of Boom Seattle secondary. But it was Wilson, who overcame a late interception to drive his team down for the come-from-behind 41-38 win, himself throwing for 452 yards and 4 TD’s as well. In a season filled with mediocre quarterback play at best, this game was a refreshing reprieve and hopefully a sign of things to come in the future between these two QB’s.
“Got the win, I want the record”
Sunday night also featured another epic game, only this time coming from baseball and the World Series Game 5 between the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers. In one of the most exciting games in recent memories, both teams combined for 25 points scored and an astounding 7 home runs. In a back and forth game that featured 5 lead changes, lasted longer than 5 hours, and went into extra innings, there didn’t feel like a single dull moment at any point, which is an amazing statement for a game as notoriously slow as baseball. But these two teams have been putting on an offensive display the whole series, and last night was no different. The Astros came out on top and are just a game away from capturing their first World Series championship. Eyes will definitely be glued to the screen come game six on Tuesday.
